Northern Souvenirs are a British Country-Pop duo, with a talent for vivid storytelling and soaring harmonies. Brummie city girl Lisa MacGregor, and Yorkshire country boy Alex Varey, met in the North, live in the South, and have made music everywhere in-between.
Meeting in the rainy town of Lancaster in 2011, whilst both studying at university, Lisa and Alex instantly hit-it-off. After trying out covers at an Open Mic Night which Alex hosted, they started to discover their sound, and a shared love of country music began to blossom. Lisa began to pen lyrics, and Alex picked up his guitar and put music to the words. They secured their first songwriting gig at the Lancaster Music Festival, and ‘Northern Souvenirs’ were born – a name combining meeting in the North, and a sentimental love for bringing back trinkets from their travels (as well as a little inspiration from the lyrics of one of their biggest influences, ‘Deacon Blue’).
In 2016, after years of gigging, travelling, and often living miles apart (a period which inspired much of their songwriting), the pair landed in London Town, and quickly made an impact on the live music scene in the capital. They have played at top music venues across the city, including; The Spice of Life Soho (supporting North-Eastern Indie-rockers ‘Social Room’), Tooting Tram & Social, The Lucky Pig, Yard Bar Soho, and the legendary Dingwalls Camden (playing a stage which has hosted the likes of The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, and Foo Fighters). The pair have also worked with top London music promoters including Tom Bright (Bright Management/Bright Fest/Islington Radio) and HOT VOX, and partner regularly with The New World Trading Company and Pitcher & Piano.
In 2019, the pair began recording their debut EP 'Next Stop’, released January 29th 2021, with London and Bangkok-based producer North Traiphob Sangkum. The collaboration, which began as a rough demo EP with just two vocals and one rhythm guitar, went from strength to strength, pulling together an immensely talented group of live and session musicians to bring their original songs to life; Chris Hampson (Lead Guitar/Keys/Strings/Co-Producer – ‘The Go Go Five’, ‘Andrea Ojano’), Ed James Jordan (Drums/Percussion - ‘Hugo Valentine’, ‘Noble Jacks’, ‘Ben Pryer’), Billy Morrell (Bass Guitar - (‘Martin Yates’, ‘Elton John; Rocket Man Live!’, Melbourne International Jazz Festival), Emily Panes (Violin - Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts), and Ton Jakkrid Siripanich (Photography/1st Asst. Engineer). 'Next Stop' is out now!
Adjusting to the “new normal”, the pair played regular virtual gigs across social media throughout the crazy year that was 2020, live-streaming with top UK venues and Country Music platforms, and virtually “touring” their debut single ‘My Page’.
